Abraham Piper (John Piper’s son) wrote an interesting entry on “extreme” Calvinists that, as an aside, contains useful marriage advice as well. I hate to say it, but I understand the viewpoint of the letter writer. I don’t know what it is, but a certain small minority of Calvinists are so fixated on doctrine that it turns me off; they seem more passionate about Reformed Theology than Christ. I find myself compelled by the theology but dispelled by that minority, so much so that I have reservations about going to a strongly Reformed church.

On that note, a sports pet peeve of mine: the whole trend of taking first letters / syllables from athletes first and last names and calling that a nickname. It makes me angry for a whole host of reasons, and I’ve ranted about this before. For one, it’s just lazy. Pistol Pete. Sweetness. Dr. J. Those are nicknames. T-Mac, C-Webb, LT, those are just lame.

The last one gets to another reason it annoys me: it inevitably leads to redundancy. LT is Lawrence Taylor. LaDanian Tomlinson can’t use the same nickname, that’s just lame.

It also leads to confusion. Like, some people used to call Luis Gonzales LuGo for short. Then a guy comes up named Julio Lugo. That’s just confusing. Same thing with Bill Romanowski, who people called “Romo”. Now there’s a Tony Romo. Confusing.

So yeah, I refuse to do the letter/syllable thing. We desperately need to come up with different nicknames for them. I propose Droopy for McGrady.
