It’s come to my attention that people don’t really know a lot of Facebook features they should, so I thought I would highlight some of them.

Facebook Lexicon. Not really useful, just interesting. It tracks frequency of words and phrases as they appear on Walls over time. For example, I don’t watch American Idol, but apparently there was some surprise that David Cook won over David Archuleta, when Simon praised the latter. Prediction markets also indicated Archuleta was a favorite. But Cook was more popular on Facebook Walls.

It’s just fascinating in general. Like, look at the crazy spike in late January for the term “dead”. Can you guess what this was?

Friend lists. So if you go to your Friends page, on the right side, you can group your friends into different lists. At first, it wasn’t that useful; it just let you filter the friends page by each list. But now, you can adjust your privacy settings so that only friends on certain lists can see stuff, or that people on certain lists can’t see stuff. For example, see the privacy settings for your profile. You can specify which friends lists can and cannot see certain profile information by selecting “Customize”. Want only coworkers to see work phone number? Set up a coworkers list and set it here. Want only certain friends to see your Notes? Set up a list and set the permissions.

Basically, friends lists are a way to slice and dice permission settings so you only show what you want to the people you want. Friends lists and privacy. Use it. Love it.
