This interview with a professional sports gambler on the Tim Donaghy scandal is absolutely fascinating, and not just for his take on the refs, but his basketball knowledge in general. Guy watches nearly every NBA game each season, and he’s demonstrably gained a lot of knowledge, as seen by his winnings.

Some random takes of his:

  • He knew the Shaq trade would be a disaster for the Suns, and bet heavily against them after it happened.
  • In his opinion, the best coach in the NBA by a far margin is Greg Popovich. “If you are ever unsure of what the correct strategy is in a certain situation, look to the Spurs. If they are doing it, it’s probably the right strategy.”
  • Doc Rivers gets low marks: “If Popovich is the guy you lean to if you are unsure of what to do, Rivers is certainly the guy you look to if you want to know what NOT to do.”
  • On the MVP, if it were really based on the guy who means most to his team: “I’d have to go with LeBron, Garnett, or even Chris Paul over Kobe.”

A really interesting read.
