I don’t get why it’s “unromantic” to not want to go out on Valentine’s Day proper. A simple question – what’s more romantic, going out for dinner, or going out for two dinners? Because restaurants’ Valentine’s Day dinners are like twice as expensive as normal. For example, St. Michael’s Alley, a cozy restaurant we’ve enjoyed in the past. Normal entree prices are in the high teens to low 20s. You could reasonably get an appetizer, entree, dessert, glass of wine for $40 before tax and tip. The Valentine’s Day dinner? $85 a person. It’s not just them, every restaurant is like that.

I expressed my outrage to some people in our small group yesterday, and they were surprisingly in agreement, even the 6 months married 23 year olds. The general feeling: Valentine’s is an artificial romantic mandate concocted by greeting card companies. Why be slave to something so fake? I concur.
