As I’ve written before, I’m a big believer in Obama, and was genuinely moved by the inauguration. But one thing people have to chill out on: everyone saying that this could happen “only in America”.

This Slate article shows how wrong that is. People coming from stigmatized foreign minorities to lead their governments has and continues to happen all the time. Examples include Disraeli in Great Britain, Napolean in France, Ozdemir in Germany, and Fujimori in Peru. So “only in America” is a fairy tale. Indeed, given that we’ve only now elected our first minority leader and have never elected a woman president, one could argue that America is behind the curve. We need to stop patting ourselves on the back.

Opening up a chain of tire balancing stores, on the other hand, is a story that could truly only happen in America.
