Sushi places I've been to
So, me and Jieun like sushi a lot. We go entirely way too often. It's an
expensive habit. But yeah, it's among our favorite foods so we've tried a
bunch of places. Here's how I'd rank some of them, roughly from best to
worst.
Love
- Sawa Sushi (Sunnyvale) - You know, there's no reason to keep
this a secret, so there it is - this is the incredible place I wrote about
before. Just in a random strip mall. But the best sushi I've had, with
prices to match (very very expensive). Hopefully you can get in if you
try, but let me know if you want to go and we can go together.
 - Sushi Tomi
(Mountain View) - the place I go to most often. Now that Toshi's is
gone, it's pretty much the best reasonably priced sushi around. Plus they
serve a lot more dishes that are good, like soba and other things. There
tend to be a lot of Japanese people here. Always a good sign.
 - Tomisushi (San Jose) - This is a sister restaurant to Sushi
Tomi, also very good. No clue why these are good but Sushimaru (the other
sister restaurant, below) not as.
 - In Memorium: Toshi's Sushiya (Menlo Park), Higashi West (Palo
Alto)

Like
- Homma's Brown Rice Sushi (Palo Alto) - This might actually
belong in love - I just haven't gone enough to reach that point yet. Yeah,
Brown Rice Sushi, kind of weird, definitely different, but the fish is
actually really good. The only problem is that it's super ghetto, which is
why we rarely go there. It's incredibly humid in the store, so you sit
outside on plastic chairs and tables. The miso soup is served in styrofoam
cups. But yeah, if all you care about is the fish, it's a great place.
 - TGI Sushi (Mountain View) - Young is crazy about this place,
goes once a week. We checked it out. It's pretty good. The specialty rolls
are good, fish is generously cut, and not too expensive. Only thing is,
the toro we had there was the worst toro I've ever had. Ever. And the
service was awful the night we went. That's apparently an aberration, but
yeah, I guess we'll have to try again. For what it's worth, it's the best
gimmicky sushi place I've been to.
 - Le Poisson Japonais (Palo Alto) - Another one of those fusion
places. The food here is actually quite good, but if I recall correctly,
I don't remember being blown away by the sushi; it was just good. But the
other food was fantastic.
 - Seto Sushi (Sunnyvale) - There are actually 2 locations, 1 on
Maude, and a Seto Deli (the place I go to most often) across the street.
At any rate, it's pretty good, just ever so slightly below Toshi's and
Sushitomi.
 - Sushi O Sushi (Santa
Clara) - I think my parents' friends go to this place a lot. In any
case, another place with a lot of gimmicky rolls, which I tend to be wary
of, but it was surprisingly good, even the gimmicky ones. The Bay Island
Roll was delicious, I thought.
 - Blowfish Sushi To Die For (SF, San Jose) - The sushi here was
surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because it's somewhat a gimmick
restaurant, kind of a hipster place with loud music, expensive drinks,
weirdo anime prints on the walls and movies playing. Gimmicky restaurants
tend to not have good food but it was pretty good here, both the fish and
the other stuffs. It'd be rated higher except you pay a premium for the
gimmickyness. I'd rather have the better quality fish with lower prices at
Sushitomi. But if you're single and into that kind of atmosphere, you can
definitely do much worse than Blowfish.
 - Sushimaru (Sunnyvale) - Hmm. This might actually belong in the
dislike category. I just had high hopes because it's a sister restaurant
of Sushi Tomi, but for some strange reason the sushi is noticeably worse.
Maybe because it's one of those sushi boat places. But if I recall
correctly it was still decent. Rather go to Tomi, though. It is, however,
the best sushi boat place I've been to. Way better than say Miyake or
Sushi Lovers.

Dislike
- Fuki Sushi (Palo Alto)
- Wrote why on my other page, but yeah, way too expensive for the quality.
It's OK sushi, maybe even good, but it's not the best, and if you're
spending this much money you're better off going to Toshi's or whatever.
 - Sono Sushi (Mountain View) - Nothing particularly bad
about this place, it's just not very good.
 - Satsuma (Mountain View) - Even worse than Fuki Sushi, the fish
is actually bad. Ugh, I hate this place. Jieun used to like going here
because the owners are Korean, but after one too many bad experiences even
she has agreed to stay away. Seriously, the fish here is terrible.
 - Sushi Lovers (Santa
Clara) - This is that place in the Mercado. Absolutely terrible.
Generally, those sushi boat places tend to be less good. The only
exception I can think of was that random place we went to in Richmond, BC
that was open late, had sushi boats, not too expensive, but was still
really good. Anyway, yeah, I don't understand how this place is even in
business. What's worse, it gets these awards from local publications like
best sushi. Anger. Same with Miyake. But yeah, only went here once and
never again.
 - Miyake (Palo Alto, Cupertino) - I used to like this place,
dunno why. Actually, it's hit and miss. Some days, it's bearable. Some
days, it's beyond unbearable. If you stick with the cooked stuff, like the
Miami Roll or the California Rolls, it's actually pretty good, because
they have good sauces. Their spicy sauce on the spicy tuna rolls are also
good. But the fish... again, hit and miss, but the hits only get as high
as passable. I dunno, maybe I'll have to go again sometime to confirm, but
yeah, it's been pretty bad the past couple times.
