The old KFBC youth choir, circa 1992?

This is a great picture that I stole from Paul Lee's web site. At our old church, we had a youth choir, which was pretty good in its hayday. Anyway, it turned out that for the most part if you wanted to be involved with church you had to be in the youth choir. That really bothered me and I hated it. So even though I played piano for the group, I always said that I wasn't in the choir, and was kind of stubborn about it. Yeah, I'm lame. So sue me.

Anyway, looking at this picture brings back a lot of memories. For example, the guy, third row on the left is Young Kwan Kim, our old youth pastor. He definitely had a profound influence in my early spiritual life. Gosh there are too many memories associated with just this picture. It's crazy.

The lady on the far right is Minhwa, the old director. She was from Guam.

OK, my description for this picture is almost gonna be like a mymind. Anyway, back row far right is Joonho Hyun. He was Paul Lee's mentor. Anyway, he was always a kind of good influence; generally the oldest one around. He was by the way the first praise leader from the KFBC youth group. I mean actually from the group. There were other leaders before, but he was the first youth guy to do it. He started when Tony Lee made him come to the junior high retreat, and he was so timid, it was great. Anyway, he led. After a while, David Kim (the short guy in the 3rd row wearing a suit) started playing with Joonho. Dave was great. He had mad guitar skills, and had like every Hosanna recording ever. He was really good. Anyway, for a while he was playing this 12 string guitar, but would play it like a bass. So we called it the 12 string bass. It was amusing to us. He started leading after Joonho went to UCLA. Incidentally, he also went to UCLA. He's now in seminary at Westminster in Escondido and is a pastor at Cerritos Presbyterian Church. We all became Presbyterian.

Sangsoo Park is also in this picture. He's in the back row, like 2 people to the right of Paul Lee. When he was trying out for the youth choir, you know, everyone had to sing a song in front of everyone else, and he chose Pray For Me by Michael W. Smith. The thing about this song is that, it's like really strange accompanist wise. There are certain songs that just aren't piano songs, and when they transribe them for piano, on the sheet music, it's just weird, and doesn't really sound right. Anyway, this is one of those songs, and I was accompanying, and it just sounded weird. Also, you know Michael W. Smith has a really distinctive singing voice, and Sangsoo mimics that exactly. It was great. Anyway, his tryout was him singing just like nasally MWS and me playing this funky music, and it's just like what? Great tryout.

Minho is in the back row, almost exactly center, wearing the suit. That's another interesting thing about KFBC. For a while, we all dressed up on Sundays. But we're like freshmen, junior high, stuff like that. Maybe in this picture Minho's in 8th grade? I just thought that was interesting.

Anyway, this is a great picture.
